Built in 1960, 657 N Juanita Drive is a Jack Meiselman home in Palm Springs’ Sunmor neighborhood. Today, it counts four bedrooms and three baths across roughly 1,900 square feet, a total that includes a detached casita added in 2021. The main house began as a three-bedroom, two-bath home of about 1,360 square feet. It got some Palm Springs fame along the way, too: the home appeared on the 2017 and 2018 Modernism Week Home Tours under the name “Desert Day Modern” and was featured on the cover of Home PS Magazine.
Inside, the plan is open and easy to read. The living and dining areas flow together around a wood feature wall, then run straight into the kitchen and out to the yard. Walls of glass give the house several connections to the outdoors, which is the whole idea with Meiselman’s designs. The standout detail is a private courtyard off the primary suite, open to the sky. It’s the kind of unexpected architectural moment that turns a bedroom into a little retreat, and it’s not something you see in every Meiselman.
The bones are original, and they’re the good kind. Post-and-beam construction, tongue-and-groove ceilings, and a sloped roof all give the interior its warmth and its sense of lift. An earlier listing noted a full restoration in 2012, so the house has been cared for over more than one round of updates.
The casita is the newest chapter, and it was clearly designed with the original in mind. Its roofline echoes the main house, and it repeats the exposed beam and tongue-and-groove ceiling details. The bedroom frames views of the mountains to the south. It’s an addition that tries to speak the same language as the house it sits behind.
Changes since the original build, listed plainly:
- Detached casita completed in 2021
- Pool resurfaced and retiled, with a tanning shelf and integrated spa
- Updated Pentair pool equipment and heater
- Outdoor kitchen, covered lounge and dining areas, and a fire pit added to the backyard
- Newer water heater
- Replaced sewer line
- Solar panels and EV charging installed
Compared with the typical Meiselman home in the Registry, this one lands at the larger end for both living area and bedroom count, thanks largely to the casita. The lot is where it really stands out. At about a quarter acre, it’s noticeably bigger than the parcels most Meiselman homes sit on, which leaves room for a manicured lawn, mature citrus trees, and a backyard with panoramic mountain views.
Neighborhood
Sunmor is a historic central Palm Springs neighborhood known for its mix of Alexander and Meiselman homes. Juanita Drive is a quiet street reached from Alejo Road, and the lots along it are large by Palm Springs standards. That’s part of why the yards here can hold the pools, lawns, and outdoor living areas that make the desert climate so livable.
